OUR RELATIONS

The Beau Hunks and the Metropole Orchestra Perform Leroy Shield's Original Score

This marks the first commercial release of the complete score composed by Leroy Shield for the Laurel and Hardy feature OUR RELATIONS.

In 1936, for the Our Relations film project, Shield composed a complete score -- as opposed to his short "themes" that were peppered willy-nilly in
other Hal Roach comedies. (These well-known short themes are available on previous Beau Hunks CDs.) The score was to be played by a 23-piece orchestra.

After the film was screened for a test audience, whose reaction was disappointing, the studio decided the film was too long and too slow-moving, and it was re-edited. This resulted in substantial cuts to Shield's score. The deleted music was considered lost. However, over 60 years later, Shield scholars Piet Schreuders and Rob Stone (author of a book on Laurel and Hardy's solo films) found portions of the sheet music in Los Angeles. The entire score was later pieced together incorporating material acquired from the Library of Congress.

This CD features 35 tracks, about half of which were used in the commercially released version of the film. The rest of the material has never been heard by the public. Now the original score can be appreciated
for the first time as the composer intended.

As with previous Leroy Shield CDs released by the Beau Hunks, the album is accompanied by a detailed booklet (44 pages) containing very rare photos and
details about the music for the film. The package was loving designed by Schreuders, who co-produced the album with Beau Hunks leader Gert-Jan Blom.
